What is a Steering Team?
A Steering team is a team of women who help put your MOPS group together. They work on all aspects of the ministry from registering moms, finding volunteers, to making sure moms feel comfortable and welcomed within the group. Steering team is a great opportunity to grow as a leader. Each position is unique and key to the health of the team.
Coordinator
Personal Characteristics
- Demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Because many women in MOPS may not have committed their lives to Christ, she is in an excellent position to encourage others to make this decision.
- Displays an accurate and thorough understanding of the MOPS vision, both as it applies to her group and as it reaches moms around the world.
- Demonstrates an effective leadership style that is influential in nature, rather than authoritative. She can think strategically to identify expectations and guidelines.
- Displays an ability to identify strengths in others and encourage women to develop their own talents.
- Delegates well and enjoys having many women involved in projects.
- Demonstrates warmth, friendliness, and a desire to reach out to other mothers through her sensitivity and supportiveness.
- Reflects sensitivity, realism, flexibility, and humor.
- Communicates effectively, both one-on-one and in front of a group.
Position Responsibilities
- Encourages other members of Steering in their responsibilities, delegating appropriately, and assisting as needed.
- Sets the tone for the MOPS meetings, often by welcoming moms, sharing announcements, and handling other organizational needs.
- Disciples the Steering Team, encouraging each member to grow in her relationship with Christ.
- Leads Steering meetings, preparing an agenda that encourages the contribution of every Steering Team member.
- Identifies training needs for Steering Team members and finds opportunities to meet these needs.
- Serves as the liaison between MOPS International, the Chartering Ministry, and the MOPS group.
- Reads the MOPS Handbook, the Coordinators Handbook, and the other Positional Handbooks, and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group and the Chartering Ministry.
Discussion Group Leader
Personal Characteristics
- Demonstrates a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Shows sensitivity to and an understanding of the needs of mothers of preschoolers.
- Demonstrates an ability to effectively work with small groups.
- Understands the basics of small group dynamics and knows how to share them with the Discussion Group Leaders.
- Shows warmth and acceptance to women from every background, demonstrating discretion about the personal lives of others.
- Shares her testimony comfortably with others on appropriate occasions and knows how to lead another to Christ.
Position Responsibilities
- Coordinates the Table Leaders and is an example and encouragement to them. (She is the Discussion Group Leader for these women.)
- Leads Discussion Group Team meetings, identifying training opportunities and needs and finding ways to meet these needs.
- Promotes confidentiality and sensitivity within the individual groups, recognizing the need to refer to a more experienced person for counseling when appropriate.
- Works with MOPS group speakers to create discussion questions.
- May substitute for Table Leaders who are absent.
- Serves on Steering and attends meetings.
- Reads the MOPS Handbook and the Discussion Group Handbook and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group.
- Disciples her team and encourages each member to grow in her relationship with Christ.
Publicity
Personal Characteristics
- Demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Because members of her team may not have committed their lives to Christ, she is in an excellent position to encourage each woman to make this decision.
- Displays openness to new ideas and projects.
- Exhibits writing skills and can organize information, meet deadlines, edit when necessary, and put together material that reflects quality in both appearance and content.
- Delegates well and enjoys having many women involved in projects.
- Displays an enthusiasm about MOPS and a genuine desire to reach as many women as possible through the ministry.
Position Responsibilities
- Creatively publicizes MOPS meetings and special events in the community through a variety of tools
- Facilitates communication among MOPS moms through newsletters and other areas of communication.
- Communicates information about MOPS to the Chartering Ministry through written information and occasional presentations.
- Serves on the Steering Team and attends meetings.
- Reads the MOPS
Handbook and the Publicity Handbook and understands the vision of MOPS and her
relationship to the MOPS group.
Creative Activities

- Guides her team with the Creative Activity selection and preparation.
- Organizes materials, instructions, demonstrators, and samples of each Creative Activity before the MOPS meeting. She plans within the time and budget limits of her group, and understands the needed skills for each activity.
- Recognizes women who enjoy Creative Activities and provides opportunities for their growth.
- Appropriately utilizes the ideas and abilities of each team member, wisely delegating responsibility.
- Teaches skills and activities effectively, inspiring MOPS women to develop their skills in creative projects and encouraging women who do not feel particularly successful in this area.
- Arranges for guest demonstrators and experts to visit MOPS to share various life skills or other activities.
- Serves on the Steering Team and attends meetings.
- Reads the MOPS Handbook and Creative Activities Handbook and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group.
- Disciples her team members and encourages each woman to grow in her relationship to Christ.
Finance/Registration
Personal Characteristics
- Demonstrates a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Because members of her team may not have committed their lives to Christ, she is in an excellent position to encourage each woman to make this decision.
- Well organized and able to clearly communicate with other steering team members and chapel staff regarding money and budgets.
Position Responsibilities
- Ability to maintain and balance checkbook and bank account.
- Ability to prepare and maintain budgets for each of the steering team positions.
- Ability to keep track of and organize registration forms, members email addresses, and check-in table.
- Takes attendance at each MOPS meeting.
- Prepares and sends out weekly Evites.
- Serves on the steering team attends meetings
- Reads the MOPS Handbook and the Publicity Handbook and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group.
Service
Personal Characteristics

- Ability to communicate clearly with other steering team members, moms and volunteers.
- Has a heart for serving others.
- Can organize events, meet deadlines, and encourage participation among MOPS members.
Position Requirements
- Organizes and executes The Loft Ministry meals when necessary.
- Work closely with MOPPETS coordinator to arrange for volunteers.
- Organize and plan at least two service projects per year.
- Organizes and executes meal trains for new moms and moms in need.
Hospitality
Personal Characteristics

- Reflects a warm and friendly personality and demonstrates a caring attitude toward each mother she encounters.
- Displays a sense of calmness, which is reflected in a smooth, flexible, organized manner.
- Possesses a special God-given creative ability that can be an encouragement to others and bring a creative atmosphere to MOPS activities. She can make an atmosphere appealing.
- Delegates well and enjoys having many women involved in the completion of her team’s responsibilities.
Position Responsibilities
- Focuses on the needs of women and arranges the atmosphere of MOPS.
- Organizes the refreshments at each MOPS meeting, delegating responsibilities to team members and MOPS moms as needed.
- Assures a warm welcome for every woman who comes to MOPS.
- Delegates or plans and implements special events, both at MOPS meetings and outside of MOPS.
- Reaches out to mothers beyond MOPS, organizing help for families and the community.
- Serves on the Steering Team and attends meetings.
- Reads the MOPS Handbook and Hospitality Handbook and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group.
- Disciples her team members and encourages each woman to grow in her relationship to Christ.
MOPPETS Coordinator
Personal Characteristics
- Demonstrates a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Because many women and children in MOPS may not have committed their lives to Christ, she is in an excellent position to encourage others to make this decision.
- Displays sensitivity to needs of young mothers, even if she is not a mother of preschoolers herself.
- Exhibits a dedication to meeting the needs of children and understands their eternal worth to God.
- Communicates well with children, peers, and older adults, because building relationships with all of these people will be a part of her ministry.
- Understands what is involved in providing quality childcare to a group of small children.
- Thinks creatively about how to find and involve many people in a project.
Position Responsibilities
- Works with the Chartering Ministry and Steering Team to establish policies and procedures for the MOPPETS program.
- Recruits MOPPETS workers, either volunteers or paid help.
- Trains and encourages workers.
- Communicates with MOPS moms who leave their children in her care.
- Selects appropriate curriculum materials and develops programs and lessons for each class
- Serves on Steering and attends meetings.
- Reads the MOPS Handbook and the MOPPETS Handbook, and understands the vision of MOPS and her relationship to the MOPS group.
- Disciples her team members and encourages each member to grow in her relationship to Christ.
Table Leader
Personal Characteristics

- hows sensitivity to the needs of other mothers.
- Risks some vulnerability and transparency as she interacts with other mothers.
- Shows warmth and acceptance to women from every background, demonstrating discretion about the personal lives of others.
- Feels comfortable sharing her testimony with others on appropriate occasions and knows how to lead another to Christ.
Position Responsibilities
- Functions as a facilitator for small group discussion and leads the direction of the discussion as needed.
- Promotes an atmosphere of safety, acceptance, and belonging for each woman.
- Listens to each group member, particularly in relation to her faith.
- Communicates with group members outside of regular MOPS meetings.
- Willing to organize small functions within her own group.
- Is committed to each woman in her group, staying in regular contact with her.
- Becomes involved in seeking appropriate resources to minister to each woman as specific needs are identified within her group.
- Attends Table Leader meetings to continue learning group dynamics and communication skills.
